Ad Tier or Ad-Free? What You're Really Paying for in 2026
Going ad-free now costs $5 to $11 more a month per service. Here's the gap for every major streaming service, what you get for it besides fewer commercials, and why paying for fewer services at once is the cheapest way to skip the ads.
Almost every major streaming service now sells the same show two ways: cheaper with commercials, or more expensive without them. The gap used to be a couple of dollars. In 2026 it's often closer to ten, and for some services the ad-free plan also changes how many screens you get, whether you can download, and whether you see 4K.
Here's what the difference actually costs per service, what else you get for it, and why the cheapest way to go ad-free is usually to pay for fewer services at once.
How Much More Does Ad-Free Cost in 2026?
Across the major services, going ad-free costs about $5 to $11 more per month per service, or $60 to $132 a year. Netflix has the widest gap at $11 a month. Paramount+ has the narrowest at $5. Apple TV+ has no ad tier at all.
| Service | With Ads | Ad-Free | Monthly Gap | Yearly Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | $8.99 | $19.99 | $11.00 | $132.00 |
| Disney+ | $12.49 | $21.49 | $9.00 | $108.00 |
| Hulu | $12.49 | $21.49 | $9.00 | $108.00 |
| HBO Max | $10.99 | $18.49 | $7.50 | $90.00 |
| Peacock | $12.99 | $19.99 | $7.00 | $84.00 |
| Paramount+ | $8.99 | $13.99 | $5.00 | $60.00 |
| Prime Video | $14.99 (w/ Prime) | +$4.99 | $4.99 | $59.88 |

Verified September 2026. US standalone monthly plans at standard rates, not introductory offers. Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and Peacock checked against each provider's own help pages; Prime Video against Amazon's announcement of Prime Video Ultra; Paramount+ and Apple TV+ carried over from our 2026 streaming cost guide. Disney+ and Hulu rose on September 23, 2026, from $11.99 to $12.49 with ads and from $18.99 to $21.49 without, for new subscribers right away. Existing subscribers move to the new price on a later bill; Droid Life reports that lands on or after October 21. Prime Video's ad-free option is the Prime Video Ultra add-on, on top of a $14.99 Prime membership. Prices change often, so confirm on each provider's site.
Add it up across the seven services with an ad tier and the ad-supported versions come to $81.93 a month, while the ad-free versions come to $135.42. That's $53.49 a month, or $641.88 a year, spent purely on not seeing commercials, if you subscribed to all seven at once.
How Many Ads Do You Actually See?
Few services publish a number. HBO Max is the clear exception: its help center says Basic with Ads runs "about 6 minutes of ads per hour," playing before and during shows and movies (HBO Max Help). Peacock says Premium Plus lets you watch "with limited interruptions" but doesn't give a per-hour figure for Premium. For Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, and Prime Video, we couldn't find a per-hour ad load on the provider's own pages as of September 2026. Third-party measurements exist, but ad loads shift over time, so treat any single figure with caution.
Using HBO Max's published figure, you can price the ads yourself. If you watch 20 hours a month, that's about 120 minutes of commercials. Removing them costs $7.50 a month, or roughly $3.75 for each hour of ads you skip. Watch 5 hours a month and it's closer to $15 per hour of ads. The more you watch, the better ad-free looks.
What Else Changes Between Ad and Ad-Free Plans?
On some services the ad-free price buys only the missing commercials. On others it unlocks downloads, 4K, or more screens. It's worth knowing which before you pay the gap.
| Service | What Ad-Free Adds Besides No Ads |
|---|---|
| Netflix | Very little. Both Standard plans stream on 2 devices in 1080p with downloads on 2 devices; the ad plan carries "most" movies and shows rather than all. 4K needs Premium at $26.99. |
| HBO Max | Downloads (30 on Standard; none on Basic with Ads). Both stream on 2 devices in 1080p. 4K and 4 streams need Premium at $22.99. |
| Hulu | Downloads of select titles and Watch Party. Both plans list video up to 4K. A few shows still play ads before and after the video. |
| Disney+ | Downloads, which require Disney+ Premium or a Premium bundle. |
| Peacock | Downloads of select titles, which are Premium Plus only. |
| Paramount+ | Downloads and live CBS, plus the Showtime library, on Premium. |
| Prime Video | Ultra adds 4K, up to 5 streams, up to 100 downloads, and Dolby Atmos. |

Ad-Free Doesn't Always Mean Zero Ads
Live programming is the usual exception. HBO Max says live events have ads regardless of your plan. Peacock says Premium Plus subscribers still see ads on live sports and events, on linear channels, and on a small number of shows and movies (Peacock Help). If most of what you watch on a service is live, the ad-free upgrade buys less than it looks.
Is Ad-Free Worth It?
It's a personal call, but three questions settle it for most people:
- How many hours a month do you watch on this service? Heavy viewing spreads the monthly gap across more skipped ads.
- Does the ad-free plan add something you'd use? Downloads for a commute or a flight can matter more than the commercials.
- Is this a service you keep all year? An always-on service that plays in the background may be fine with ads. A service you watch intensely for two months is where ads hurt most.
How Rotation Makes Ad-Free Affordable
Here's the trade most people never run. This is illustrative, using the prices above:
- Six services on ad tiers, all year: Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Hulu, Peacock, and Paramount+ with ads come to $66.94 a month, or $803.28 a year.
- Two services ad-free at a time, rotating: even the most expensive pair on that list, Disney+ and Hulu at $21.49 each, is $42.98 a month. A pair like Netflix and HBO Max is $38.48.
So any two of those six, ad-free, cost at least $23.96 a month less than all six with ads, or at least $287.52 a year. The trade-off is real: you're watching two services at a time instead of six. But if you only watch one or two at once anyway, rotating lets you drop the commercials and the bill at the same time. We walk through the method in what streaming subscription rotation is, and compare it to discounted packages like the Disney+/Hulu bundle in streaming bundles vs. rotating. The savings calculator will run the numbers on your own services.
Downgrading to ads saves a few dollars on every service. Pausing the services you aren't watching saves the whole price, and can leave room to go ad-free on the ones you are.
Where Intermission Comes In
Intermission builds a personalized 12-month streaming plan from your watchlist and budget: which services to keep and which to pause each month, and when to come back. You tell it which tier you actually pay for, ads or ad-free, monthly or annual, or type in your exact price, and the plan works from that number. When a month runs tight, the budget you set decides what fits.
Intermission never asks for your streaming passwords and never touches your accounts. It gives you a link to each service's own page, and you make the change. Its recommendations come only from your watchlist and budget, never from commissions.

How Much More Does Ad-Free Streaming Cost in 2026?
Across the major services we checked in September 2026, going ad-free costs about $5 to $11 more a month per service, or $60 to $132 a year. Prime Video's ad-free option is the Prime Video Ultra add-on at $4.99 a month on top of a Prime membership.
Do Ad-Free Plans Ever Show Ads?
Sometimes. HBO Max says live events have ads on every plan, and Peacock says Premium Plus still shows ads on live sports, channels, and a few titles. Hulu notes that a few shows on its no-ads plan play ads before and after the video.
How Many Ads Are on an Ad-Supported Plan?
Few services publish a number. HBO Max says Basic with Ads runs about 6 minutes of ads per hour. For the other major services we couldn't find a per-hour figure on the provider's own pages, so check each service's help center.
Can Rotating Subscriptions Make Ad-Free Affordable?
Often, yes. If you keep only one or two services active at a time, two ad-free plans can cost less than several ad-supported plans running all year. The trade-off is that you watch fewer services at once.
